Tamayo Perry Dies After Hawaii Shark Attack
Renowned Surfer and Lifeguard Was 49
Renowned Pipeline rider and lifeguard Tamayo Perry has been identified as the victim of a fatal shark attack on Oahu's east shore today. The 49-year-old died on Sunday afternoon after being attacked in the water near Oahu's North Shore.
Perry was a well-known surfer and lifeguard in the North Shore community. He was also a professional surfer who competed around the world.
"He was a great guy and a great surfer," said North Shore lifeguard Kai Lenny. "He was always smiling and always willing to help others."
The attack happened at around 2:30 p.m. Perry was surfing at Goat Island, a popular surf spot near the Banzai Pipeline. Witnesses said that Perry was bitten by a shark and then pulled underwater.
Lifeguards responded to the scene and pulled Perry from the water. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shark attack is the first fatal one in Hawaii since 2015.
