Brisbane Lions' Headland and McGrath Team Up for Sir Doug Nicholls Guernesy Design

A Legacy of Excellence and Cultural Pride

Brisbane Lions premiership legends Des Headland and Ash McGrath have once again joined forces to create the Club's 2023 Sir Doug Nicholls Guernesy, celebrating the Indigenous heritage and diversity of the AFL.

Cultural Tapestry Embodied in Design

The guernsey, designed by renowned artist Kevin Bynder, weaves together the stories and experiences of Headland and McGrath, who played pivotal roles in the Lions' premiership victories. It features intricate Indigenous symbols representing strength, unity, and connection to Country.

Against a vibrant backdrop of the Queensland landscape, the design highlights the Brisbane Lions' commitment to Indigenous recognition and reconciliation.

Honoring Cultural Legacy

The 2023 AFL Players Indigenous Map on the guernsey showcases the cultural diversity of the league's Indigenous players, paying tribute to their unique contributions and stories.

The guernsey was proudly photographed by Dan Fewquandie, a Wakka Wakka and Gubbi Gubbi man, on Yuggera and Ugarapul land, adding further depth and authenticity to its cultural significance.

Leadership Through Change

The Brisbane Lions' Indigenous Guernsey represents the Club's unwavering commitment to inclusivity and cultural understanding. It serves as a symbol of leadership and inspiration for both the club and the broader community.

Bre Koenen, Brisbane Lions Premiership captain and 2023 Grand Final best on ground, embodies the spirit of resilience and growth that has propelled the team forward.

As the Brisbane Lions navigate the Year of Change, the Indigenous Guernsey stands as a beacon of cultural pride and unity, uniting the club, its supporters, and the wider AFL community.
